Andrew Lamb pitched five strong innings, and five Hammond players had at least two hits as the Skyhawks defeated the visiting Cardinal Newman Cardinals 12- 2 Friday, March 14.
Cardinal Newman jumped out to an early 1- 0 lead when Rush Tompkins hit an RBI double in the first knocking in Tommy Winterstein. But Lamb settled down after that, allowing only five more hits, two to Tompkins, and one more run in the fifth. He struck out just two but induced 10 ground ball outs.
The Skyhawks came out blazing in the second inning. Raymond Prince led off the inning with a walk off Cardinal starter Mark Greenwood and scored on a Jay Talbot single to tie the score. After a walk loaded the bases, Austin Hood knocked in the go- ahead run on a ground ball to short. Kyle Towles followed with a two- run single, and he scored on an error by the Cardinals.
The carnage continued in the third as Hammond put together three straight hits against Greenwood knocking him out of the game. David Richardson came in and got the first two batters but then gave up two more hits giving Hammond two more runs and a 9- 1 lead.
