James Benjamin "Bennie" Jones
Funeral services for James Benjamin "Bennie" Jones, 68, of Horrell Hill, SC were held at 1 pm Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church with interment following in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family received friends from 5 to 8 pm on Wednesday evening at the funeral home. On- line condolences may be sent to www.mem.com. Mr. Jones, or Bennie as he was affectionately known, passed away on Monday evening, March 24, 2008. He was born in the Ashwood Community in Sumter County, S.C. to Mary Caughman Jones and the late J.C. Jones. Mr. Jones retired from Richland County as a residential/commercial building inspector. He was also owner and operator of Southern Concrete Pumping Service. Mr. Jones was a veteran of the Army National Guard.
Mr. Jones was a charter member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, and he was involved in various organizations. He was four time past president of the Lower Richland Ruritan Club, past president of the Men's Club, a member of the Horrell Hill Supper Club, a Lifetime member of the Lower Richland Masonic Lodge #406, first Boy Scout Leader at Asbury UMC. He was also a Shriner at Jamil Temple where he served as Potentates Aide for several Potentates, and a past member of the Flying Fezzes, Motor Patrol, and Executives.
Mr. Jones enjoyed participating in many community events including the Carolina Children' s Home Annual B- B- Q Cook- off in which he won first place several times. He cooked hash and baked beans for the Asbury UMC B- B- Q. He enjoyed farming and shared his produce with many in the community. Mr. Jones also played "Santa" for the Carolina Children's Home, Boy Scout Groups, Asbury Kindergarten, and several other charity groups.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Martha Stevenson Jones; their children, Wendy Jones and Jimmie Jones; his grandson, Gage Swink; his mother, Mary C. Jones; his brother and sister- in- law, Jerry and Beverly Jones; his niece and nephew, Roxane Jones and Charles Jones.
