South Carolina Summit on Women to be April 16, 2008

The Alliance for Women at Columbia College and The S.C. Commission on Women are pleased to announce that registration has begun for the first S.C. Summit on Women, to be held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on Wednesday, April 16. A highlight of the conference will be the announcement of the 2008 Women of Achievement Awards.

First Lady Jenny Sanford is serving as the event's honorary chair, and co- chairs are The Honorable Gilda Cobb- Hunter and Dr. Ann Kulze.

The S. C. Summit on Women is a one- day conference of hope and inspiration designed for corporate, government, community, and non- profit leaders interested in women's achievements, women's challenges, and women's opportunities. The conference will focus on accomplishments, new initiatives, and possibilities for improvements in the three major areas of emphasis identified by The S.C. Commission on Women and The Alliance for Women:

• Economic autonomy

• Political participation

• Health and Well- Being

Keynote speakers will motivate and excite participants as they talk about health, entrepreneurship, and public service:

Dr. Ann Kulze: Here's to Health! Taking Care of Ourselves!

Dr. Ann Kulze is a nationally recognized expert and motivational speaker in the areas of nutrition, healthy lifestyles, and disease prevention. She worked as a family physician for 14 years, has been featured by a number of national media outlets

including Oprah and Friends

Radio, Time Magazine, NPR,

WebMD, CNN Radio, Cosmopolitan

, Woman's World,

Prevention, and Redbook, among many others.

Mignon Clyburn: Making our Mark:Women's Spirit of Public Service

Mignon Clyburn is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, and currently serves on the Public Service Commission representing the 6th Congressional District. Prior to being elected to the Public Service Commission in 1998, she was editor and general manager of a weekly newspaper, the Coastal Times from 1984-1998. She is an officer for real estate investment firm Indigo Holdings and is a member of the National and Southeastern Associations of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC and SEARUC), serving on several subcommittees.

Carolyn Sawyer: Forget the Glass Slipper

Carolyn Sawyer, CEO & chief strategist of Tom Sawyer Company, has spent more than two decades fine- tuning the focus of marketing communications. In 2003, President Bush appointed Sawyer to the Brown v. Board of Education 50th Anniversary Commission, where she served as chair of the marketing communications committee. A former network news correspondent, Sawyer has an award- winning track record in local radio and television, national cable, and network television news.
