One of the special social events of the season, The Carolina Cup, was not stopped by the rain on March 29, 2008. Women were decked out in their new spring dresses and wide brimmed hats, and men looked dapper in suits and hats at the historic Springdale Race Course in Camden, S.C. for some of the finest steeplechase racing in America. Thoroughbred horses raced along the emerald turf at 35 mph and jumped hurdles nearly five feet high. Patrons enjoyed the six afternoon races, even after rain fell on the track for the latter half. Novice and seasoned horses vied for over $161,000 in purse money highlighted by the $75,000 Carolina First Carolina Cup.
The Carolina Cup has achieved phenomenal success since its 1930 inaugural running. Each year, it attracts over 70,000 racing fans.
The big winner of the Carolina First Carolina Cup was a six- year- old mare named Imagina. She won her first steeplechase on the Springdale Race Course a year ago.
