Bearcats stay perfect, take Region

The Brookland- Cayce Bearcats completed an undefeated and championship season in Region IV 3A play with a 7- 4 defeat of rival Airport Tuesday, April 15.

To'Nel Legette started the scoring for B- C with a two- run home run in the first inning. The Eagles answered back in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot from Lucas Knight, then they tied the game in the second with three straight hits and run from Steven Griggs.

The scored remained tied until the sixth inning when the Bearcats plated two on pitch that got away from catcher Steven Griggs.

The Eagles got one run back to bring the score to 4- 3 when Jacob Coleman singled and scored.

Westmoreland put the game away for Brookland- Cayce with a two- run blast in the top of the seventh inning.

Jeff Estep was 3- for- 3 for the Bearcats. Steven Griggs went 2- for- 3 for the Eagles.

The Bearcats not only won their 17th region title in 2008, they dominated the region outscoring opponents by an average of nearly 9- 1. Their only loss of the season came to 4A Sumter in the Forest Acres Classic. The Bearcats won the International Paper Classic in early March and beat non- region foes like A.C. Flora, Hartsville, Lexington, White Knoll, and Dorman along the way to compile a 21- 1 record with just one game remaining against White Knoll April 17.

Future USC Gamecock Adam Westmoreland pitched the win against Airport improving to 5- 1. He led a staff that compiled a 1.46 ERA with 153 strike- outs. Prior to the Airport game, Westmoreland had a 0.68 ERA and 53 strike- outs. James Hall is 6- 0 with a 2.26 ERA and 35 strike- outs while Jeremy Brazell is 5- 0 with 21 strike- outs.

As of April 14, the Bearcats had racked up a 0.330 team batting average and hit 17 home runs. Of those with 30 or more at bats, Justin Gross and O.B. Johnson led with 0.407 and 0.403 batting averages respestively. Westmoreland had a 0.397 average with a team- high 23 RBI. To'Nel Legette led the Bearcats with nine of their 39 stolen bases.
