Online high school to begin in the fall
Contributed by Insight School of S.C.

South Carolina's newest high school is being built without the assistance of a single architect, engineer or contractor.

That's because when Insight School of South Carolina opens next fall, it will be completely online.

The South Carolina Public Charter School District Board of Trustees authorized the new charter school on April 3. Like every other public high school in the state, Insight School of South Carolina will be tuition- free for South Carolina residents. Unlike other high schools, enrollment in Insight School of South Carolina is open to students residing anywhere in South Carolina.

"Insight School of South Carolina provides an alternative for those high school students whose needs are not being met in a traditional school setting," said Keith Oelrich, CEO of Insight Schools. "Our educational model is designed to provide a learning option that maximizes flexibility and personalization, without sacrificing academic quality."

While Insight School of South Carolina itself may be new, Insight currently manages virtual high schools in four other states, said Oelrich. Before joining Insight, Insight's national management team led some of the largest online high school organizations in the country, collectively educating

over one million students in all 50 states and throughout the world.

To ensure access to learning, Insight School of South Carolina students will receive a school- issued laptop computer, printer, and Internet reimbursement.

"Most often, we are forced to take a 'one size fits all' approach to education," said Diana Penning, a high school teacher from Columbia who also serves as president of the Insight School of South Carolina charter formation committee. "With this new school, we can provide a much more customized approach that addresses different learning styles and paces."

A series of information sessions for parents and students is currently being planned for locations throughout South Carolina and will be announced soon, she added.

Going beyond what most schools typically offer, Insight School of South Carolina will offer a catalog of 120 courses to meet the needs of students with different backgrounds and aspirations. For more information, visit the school's web site at www.insightsc.net.
