A leader on and off the court

South Carolina junior guard, Brionna Dickerson, was content with her team's performance this season but is looking forward to stepping into more of a leadership role in the 2008- 09 season.

Her junior year was Dickerson's most productive season yet. She achieved major milestones such as scoring her 400th career point against No. 8 LSU. "It was exciting, but it also motivated me to be even more productive," she said. Dickerson also played a major role in winning key games this season for her team, including a game against Virginia where she scored a career- high of 27 points. She was also named AgSouth Athlete of the Week.

The Columbia native's season started out a little rocky though. Dickerson missed all or most of five games early in the season with a foot injury. "It was difficult, but I had to step into an off- court leadership role and support my team from the sidelines," she said. However, being injured was not unknown territory for Dickerson.

In her senior season at Heathwood Hall, Dickerson missed the whole season due to an ACL tear. "The injury was devastating and not being able to play was very hard," she said. "I wouldn't wish an ACL tear on anyone. But the support from my family and the fans in Columbia helped a lot."

Dickerson was able to continue her career in front of the home crowd by attending the University of South Carolina. She said that playing in her hometown makes her more nervous and puts more pressure on her to do well, but it also comes with support from her family, who make it to every home game.

So, what will Dickerson be doing in the off- season to get ready for next season? Although she will be studying abroad this summer, she still plans to prepare for her leadership role next season by staying in shape, lifting, and connecting with the new players. "I plan to have more of a hands- on role by being someone for others to look up to and respect." As for her personal goals for next season, Dickerson says she would like to stay healthy and be as productive as possible.
