Group performs to support human rights

Amara Camara of Guinea was the featured speaker at the Afr ican Awareness Workgroup program.

The African Awareness Workgroup of Carolina Peace Resource Center recently held a program in support of the people of Guinea who are struggling under a tyrannical dictator, shortages of food, and a deteriorating infrastructure. The featured speaker was Amara Camara, a native of Guinea who is performing in the U.S. and living in Columbia.

Heading up the program at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall was the band Another Dimension. After Camara spoke to the audience, he led a drumming session.

The African Awareness Workgroup strives to educate the community about the human rights violations and the massive poverty in many of the countries of Africa, while dispelling myths about the continent, and holding true to the beauty of the cultures that make each country different. The workgroup puts on events periodically, and would love volunteers.

The next event will be May 25 at 4 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. The focus will be on Mali. Guest speakers will include three Peace Corps volunteers who served in Mali.
