Dr. Patrick Hickey, professor of nursing at USC, spoke to the Columbia Rotary Club May 12 on "A nurse's quest to complete the seven summits."
This "cross between Florence Nightingale and Indiana Jones" ran through his seven- year odyssey, 2001 to 2007, to climb the seven highest mountains on seven continents.
Citing a frostbitten nose, freezing gales, a 20- foot fall, and an extreme fear of heights, he demonstrated to the stay- at- home Rotarians how someone with a goal can survive high mountains and deal with adversity. On his final climb, Mt. Everest on May 24, 2007, Hickey carried the USC mascot Cocky which he presented to President Sorenson on his return.
