Iris Society crowns winners

The S.C. Iris Society held its 48th standard flower

show called Celebrating Fifty

Years of Iris Flower Shows

April 26 at the Garden Club Council of Greater Columbia. It was the 50th Anniversary of the region five affiliate of the S.C. Iris Society. The show chairman was Ruth Bowers.

Horticulture consultant Wayne Smith arranged the Court of Honor consisting of the Best Specimen of the Show and nine other lris selected through the elimination process. They were awarded special AIS resettles and prizes from S.C. Iris Society.

A silver medal, certificate, and horticulture sweepstakes rosette of the AIS was given to the exhibitor with the most blue ribbons. The silver medal winner was Ann Coggins. Shirley Paquet took home the bronze.

Other blue ribbon winners were Mary Gail Salley with Hello Darkness About Town and , Janice Hull with Lousiana Black Gamecock.

Design Consultant Esther Sheppard arranged for the Standard Flower Show's designs. Gloria Neal won Best in Show for design.

The following were winners in the design portion with the following classes:

Class 1: Celebrating our Southern Heritage - blue ribbon winner Joy Salter.

Class 2: Celebrating American Iris Society and It's Organization 1929- 2008 - blue ribbon winner Betty Smith.

Class 3: Celebrating South Carolina's other Iris Societies - blue ribbon winner Bernice Solson.

Class 4: Celebrating picnics and Auctions of the Past - blue ribbon winner Gloria Neal.

Class 5: Celebrating and Remembering OUJ; Deceased Members - blue ribbon winner Janice Hull.

The S.C. Iris Society invites all to attend the upcoming auction to be held in August of many new varieties, as well as, the long time favorites .
